Luckily, there are plenty of simple activities that can help promote mental health in seniors, from spending time with animals to playing computer games.

1. Attending Group Exercise Classes

Regular physical activity helps seniors to stay healthy and independent for longer, which can boost mood and alleviate depression. In fact, it’s been found that exercising three times a week could be more effective than medication in relieving the symptoms of major depression in elderly people

While it’s possible to exercise at home, attending classes has the added benefit of socialization, which is really important for seniors who might feel lonely or isolated.

2. Playing Computer Games

Studies have shown that playing computer games can increase brain power in older adults, making it easier for them to solve problems and complete tasks.

Keeping the brain healthy and active is hugely important for mental health and could protect against memory-loss later in life. Playing games is also fun and stimulating without requiring lots of physical movement, making it ideal for seniors who are ill or disabled.

3. Spending Time with Furry Kids Helps Improve Mental Health in Seniors

Who doesn’t feel better after spending time with a four-legged friend? Research has shown that seniors feel less lonely after spending alone time with dogs, and there’s evidence that having pets can reduce stress and lower blood pressure.

Seniors also enjoy a sense of purpose that comes from caring for a pet — whether they’re grooming Fido’s coat or administering breath-freshening tablets to keep him healthy.

4. Working in the Garden

Research has shown that seniors who spend time gardening have higher levels of self-esteem and better physical health.

Unlike other tasks, gardening is varied and interesting, meaning there’s always something new to get investigated. This makes it more engaging for seniors and reduces the chance that they’ll lose interest.

Gardening can be made to suit almost anyone — whether they want to spend hours maintaining a vegetable patch or just enjoy watering the flowers from time to time.

5. Joining an Art Class

Art therapy is an excellent way to improve mental health for seniors. It helps them express themselves, think creatively and learn new skills. It reduces boredom and helps to relieve stress and anxiety, as well as improving cognitive and fine motor skills.

There are classes in everything from drawing and painting to pottery and flower-arranging, so there’s something to suit everyone.

Mental health is just as important for seniors as it is for children, teens and adults. Stimulating activities like those listed above can make a huge difference to the quality of life for older adults.
